The Philippines is getting serious about 3x3

The Philippines finished 11th out of 20 teams in the recently-concluded FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2018.

Winning two out of four games, the Filipino team made up of Roger Pogoy, Stanley Pringle, Troy Rosario, and Christian Standhardinger failed to make it out of the group stages.

Still, all of their matchups were, without a doubt, competitive. “I truly believe that if we prepared 100 percent, we would’ve won all four (games),” Standhardinger said in the team’s thanksgiving dinner on Thursday in Ortigas.

That is exactly why the next time the Philippines competes in the international stage, they vow to only be prepared. “Kayang-kaya talaga ng mga Pinoy na makipagsabayan sa the best of the best ng mundo kung meron lang magandang preparation. Maganda kung matutuloy yung program na mabuo yung 3x3,” Rosario said.

To do just that, both the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and team backer Chooks-to-Go are already in the planning phase for more defined structure for 3x3. “This prospect of having focus outside of 5-on-5, it’s not gonna be easy. But it will be done,” SBP official and Gilas Pilipinas team manager Butch Antonio said.

The first step for that more defined structure is realizing the needs of the Philippine 3x3 program itself. “We need to sustain a 3x3 team in the country. We can’t always outsource players so we need to have a decent program,” Ronald Mascarinas, president of the team backer, said.

In that light, 3x3’s leaders are hopeful for a nationwide league. “There is no concrete plan right now, but what’s important is that the SBP is dead serious in forming a full-time 3x3 team and organizing a sustainable 3x3 tournament nationwide,” Mascarinas shared.

If this comes to fruition, the prospects for a Philippine representative in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics through 3x3 are nothing but positive. “The next order is for us is to sit down with SBP and agree on what to do. Lahat-lahat naman tayo, serious for us to qualify sa 3x3 sa Olympics,” Mascarinas said.
