Muntinlupa continues to set the pace in the 2018 MPBL Anta Datu Cup
It’s only getting clearer and clearer that Muntinlupa is getting hungrier and hungrier following a runner-up finish in the inaugural conference of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
Now in the 2018 Anta Datu Cup, the Cagers scored their second straight convincing victory at the expense of rookie team Marikina, 85-76, right at home inside the Muntinlupa Sports Complex on Thursday.
The home team counted four players in double-digits led by Chito Jaime who had a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double to go along with four assists.
Felix Apreku only had eight points, but there was no doubt that his energy provided the biggest boost for Muntinlupa en route to a league-leading 2-0 record. He wound up with 16 rebounds, three steals, and one block to his name.
The Cagers actually started slow and found themselves chasing down a double-digit deficit after the opening salvo, but regrouped just in time in the middle periods behind Jaime’s scoring and Apreku’s hustle.
For the Shoemasters, Yves Sazon had another scoring spree with 27 points. It wasn’t enough against their opponent’s balance, however, as they saw their standing level to 1-1.
In other results, Bacoor debuted with a bang by enduring fellow expansion team Cebu, 76-71.
ABL champion Oping Sumalinog showed the way with 22 points for the Strikers and was flanked by Mark Montuano who posted an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double as well as Mikee Reyes who had 15 markers.
