Davao Occidental has started its maiden campaign with a big bang in back-to-back wins
Davao Occidental leaned on a seasoned veteran and a recruit from Visayas to earn a share of the top spot in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
Former PBA veteran Leo Najorda and ex-University of Visayas standout Emmanuel Calo each scored 21 points to propel the Tigers past more heralded Quezon City, 90-78, on Tuesday at the Pasig Sports Center.
Najorda and Calo also had similar rebounding numbers at six apiece as well as assist numbers at three apiece.
On the back of those two, Davao Occidental forged a two-way tie with also 2-0 Muntinlupa for first place in the South Conference of the league.
It definitely didn’t come easy, however, as the Tigers took some time to get going and needed a 31-point third quarter to break away for good.
Billy Ray Robles also delivered for them with an all-around stat line of seven points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four blocks.
For the Capitals, five players were in double-digits led by Jeff Morillo who had 15 points to his name. They remain winless in two games
Meanwhile, Jai Reyes was the star of the show as visiting Laguna took the fight out of home team Pasig, 83-75.
Reyes, a multi-time champion with Ateneo de Manila University, posted a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double to go along with five assists to lead the Heroes in evening their record to 1-1.
Marlon Monte paced the 0-2 Pirates with 17 points.
