Ateneo got the better of FEU in a semifinals matchup once more
Ateneo de Manila University and Far Eastern University were going at it again in a semifinals showdown, this time in the 2018 Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup.
Isaac Go was yet again a thorn on the side of the Tamaraws while five different players connived in the pivotal push that ultimately lifted the Blue Eagles onto a 50-38 decision on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Go only had five points and three rebounds, but his inside presence gave no good looks to their opponents. “Everybody stepped up and did their job. We responded to coach’s message,” he told reporters post-game.
Still, the two teams were neck-and-neck, with FEU only chasing down a two-point deficit before Raffy Verano, Thirdy Ravena, Anton Asistio, Matt Nieto, and Angelo Kouame got together for a 10-2 run that put Ateneo ahead for good.
No player was in double-digits for the UAAP champions, but they counted seven players who contributed five to seven points.
This was the same formula for success they used to down the Tamaraws in two consecutive UAAP Final Four matchups. “Our system did not do anything special. The coaching staff is just happy that we played defense,” coach Sandy Arespacochaga said.
On the back of that balanced effort on both ends, Ateneo advanced to their first Filoil Preseason Finals in seven years. Then, they won it all with a rookie Kiefer Ravena and Greg Slaughter.
The Blue Eagles will now await the winner between San Beda University and College of St. Benilde in the Finals.
For the Tamaraws, Prince Orizu was the only player in double-digits with 11 points.
