NCAA rivals will get to test one another when San Beda and Mapua go at it for all the glory

Both San Beda High School and Nazareth School of National University were missing key cogs in the semifinals of the 2018 Filoil Flying V Preseason Juniors Tournament.

Still, the two teams duked it out until the end where Kai Oliva took charge and took the game for the Red Cubs, 83-81, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Oliva only had 10 points and shot 3-of-15 from the field to go along with six rebounds and five turnovers, but his back-to-back hits with under 30 seconds remaining proved to be the difference for the boys from Taytay.

Josiah Alcantara was the high man for San Beda with 16 points while Jade Talampas had 11 markers of his own.

Showing character even without Batang Gilas players Yukien Andrada and Joshua Lazaro and in the face of a powerhouse NU side, head coach JB Sison is feeling better and better about their chances heading into the oncoming NCAA Season. “Talagang kailangan namin ng experience e. Medyo kino-consider ko pa na mga bata ito so we’re trying to get as much games as we can,” he said.

For the Bullpups, Cyril Gonzales showed the way with 18 points and seven rebounds while Dayrit chipped in 17 markers and seven boards.

Dayrit also had a good look at a possible game-winner, but his shot only hit the side of the rim.

Nonetheless, even without the core of Gerry Abadiano, Terrence Fortea, and Carl Tamayo, all in Argentina for Batang Gilas, they were 0.9 seconds away from the Finals.

Instead, Filoil Preseason Finals will be a probable playoff preview of the looming NCAA 94 as meeting San Beda there will be Mapua High School.

The Red Robins punched their ticket into the championship round after pushing away fighting Far Eastern University-Diliman, 88-86, in double-overtime.

Paolo Hernandez was the hero for the 2017 NCAA champions as it was his follow-up of a miss that proved to be the go-ahead basket.

A defensive stop and a breakaway layup later and Mapua forged a semifinals showdown with NCAA rival San Beda.

The Baby Tamaraws were led by RJ Abarrientos by 18 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds.
