Arellano head coach Jerry Codinera was not a fan of former ward Jiovani Jalalon's suckerpunch
Philippine basketball legend Jerry Codinera was not surprised at the now infamous free-for-all that broke out in the matchup between Gilas Pilipinas and Australia last Sunday.
“Ini-expect ko yun because nakita ko lopsided ang laban e. So saan aabout yun, di ba,” he said. “Hindi naman pwedeng talo nang ganun tapos ganun lang so something will happen, alam ko na agad.”
The Filipinos were at the wrong end of a whipping in just the third quarter of their FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier matchup before things took a turn for the worse.
What surprised Codinera, though, was how Jiovani Jalalon, his former ward in Arellano University, got involved even though he wasn’t even activated for the game.
Jalalon, dressed in street clothes, was caught on camera landing a solid right hook to the face of Australia’s Nathan Sobey who was already being escorted by security.
One thing’s for sure, Codinera said that Jalalon did not do anything of that sort in his time as a Chief. “’Di naman namin tinuturo yung ganoon. ‘Di namin tinuturo yung mga ganoong away,” he said.
In the end, the former national team player said that all that happened was nothing but unfortunate. “Siguro, cooler heads sana prevented it. You have to be the better person,” he said.
He then continued, “Siyempre, gulo yan e so kung pwede i-avoid, i-avoid. Nakakahiya e.”
