FIBA: Guiao blames Kickert for starting Gilas-Boomers brawl
"What the Gilas players did was, to me, a natural human instinct in that situation. So, actually ako, I think itís the Australians who need to apologize, not the Gilas team because itís Kickertís action that started the whole thing," --- Yeng Guiao.

MANILA, Philippines --- Former national team head coach Yeng Guiao is not convinced that the unfortunate Gilas-Boomers brawl is entirely the fault of the Pinoys.

The Australians had a hand in it too, and they should apologize as well, particularly Daniel Kickert.

Guiao believes Kickert triggered the whole thing, which is what Gilas head coach Chot Reyes is saying.

"What the Gilas players did was, to me, a natural human instinct in that situation. So, actually ako, I think it’s the Australians who need to apologize, not the Gilas team because it’s Kickert’s action that started the whole thing," Guiao said Wednesday after a PBA game featuring his NLEX team and Magnolia.

"I do not believe in Luc Longley saying it’s Chot Reyes. Wala namang ginawa si Chot eh. Yung sinabi niya, well. .. That’s again, maybe, that’s debatable. But what Kickert did was the trigger of everything," he added.

Kickert hit RR Pogoy with an elbow to the face after Pogoy shoved Chris Goulding to the floor following an offensive foul.

But Guiao says Kickert never should have reacted in the first place and the Boomers are just looking for someone to blame after the fracas.

"Yung nangyari kay Pogoy, yung banggaan nila ni Goulding, basketball play pa iyon eh. that was still a basketball play and the refs blew their whistle," Guiao said.

"So I think the Australians are just looking for somebody to blame when the ang dapat iblame ang the Australians, who I think are looking for trouble when they came here. The tone was set the day before when they were ripping the decals without any permission. If I coached the national team I would never do that coming into any venue and you have to respect the property of other people whatever they say kahit ano pa man yung dahilan," he added.

In the end, Guiao is firm in his belief that Kickert pretty much started the brawl.

And Guiao can't figure out why Kickert has never apologized for his own actions in the incident.

"Kickert I think started it all, and he didn't even apologize. All he said was it's regrettable. And all he said was it's unfortunate. But he almost killed somebody and he did not apologize," Guiao said.

"So sa akin pag hindi ka nagalit dun, hindi ka normal. Some people are taking the high ground but ako nagpapakatotoo lang ako. I dont think it's Chot Reyes's fault, it's Kickert's fault. He started it. And the bad thing about ths is our Gilas players are profusely apologizing for what happened, the guy who started it never apologized," he added.

In the end though, Guiao acknowledges that the player's actions were wrong.

However, he can understand the way they reacted. It was human nature and it was a lose-lose situation for our players. Watch their teammate get bullied and they'll hear something negative.

Stand up and defend their teammate and well. they'll hearing negative things now.

"To me, what is more embarrassing, if Kickert did that in front of our countrymen with us hosting, and he did not suffer any consequences after doing that..To me, sa akin yun ang nakakahiya.. na nandito ka sa Pilipinas, binagsakan ka ng siko ng napalaking tao. Kung yun ay naging kapatid mo, naging tatay mo, naging anak mo, kahit nga yung aso ko ginanun nya, makakatikim sa akin yun eh. So, it’s really to be, para magpakatotoo ka. Natural reaction talaga yun. Sabi ko nga, kung hindi nag-react ng ganun baka mas nakakahiya pa. Bakit mo pinabayaan yung kakampi nyo?" Guiao said.

"I will not justify that. Mali talaga yun. I agree na mali talaga yun. Siguro nung burst of emotion, after that dapat naawat na, dapat naano na. Yun hindi ko majujustify yun. But in that instant, that split second when there's a burst of emotion, galit na ganun reaction mo, kung tao ka, flesh and blood ka and nakita mo yun, magre-react ka talaga. Kaya nga to me it's just being human," Guiao added.
