Young Ateneo de Manila University has stood up to each and every national and club team it has faced in the 2018 William Jones Cup.
In their final assignment, the Blue Eagles again gave their all against Iran before succumbing in the second half for a 63-70 decision on Sunday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taiwan.
The UAAP champions, the only collegiate team in the tournament, were off to a strong start and even had an eight-point lead at the half.
Playing in their eighth straight game in as many days, however, Ateneo ran out of gas just as the Iranians got going in the final frame.
Matt Nieto topped the scoring column for the Filipinos with 14 points while Thirdy Ravena also added 12 markers of his own. Ivorian reinforcement Angelo Kouame posted an 11-point, 14-rebound double-double.
The loss puts a stop to the Blue Eagles’ three-game win run and places them one game shy of a podium finish.
Nonetheless, the 5-3 showing is nothing but a big achievement – especially as they are the first-ever collegiate team to have represented the Philippines in the Jones Cup.
