NU leaned on the two-way brilliance of Cyril Gonzales to punch its way into the Finals of the 2018 Asean School Games
Another day, another shining star for Nazareth School of National University in the 2018 Asean School Games.
Cyril Gonzales was a two-way force as he showed the Bullpups the way right through overmatched Thailand, 106-71, on Tuesday at the Gem In Mall in Shah Alam, Malaysia.
Gonzales, an incoming third-year swingman for the Sampaloc-based squad, poured in 23 points in 55.6 percent shooting to go along with six rebounds and four steals.
More than the scoring, though, his effort at the other end keyed the UAAP powerhouse to their third win in as many games in the tournament. “He gave a great effort on defense and was also the sparkplug for us on the offensive end,” head coach Goldwin Monteverde said.
Indeed, Gonzales was tasked to guard Suphakit Tithikhunrat who was coming off a 39-point performance the last time around.
He did nothing but rise to the challenge and limited the Thai gunner to just 22 points all while muffing on 12 of his 18 shots.
Gonzales was then backstopped by Bacolod recruit Harold Alarcon and Batang Gilas big Carl Tamayo who scored 16 and 15 points, respectively.
With the win, Freego-backed Team Philippines is now through to the Finals where they face off with a Malaysia side which will enjoy homecourt advantage
Meanwhile, in the girls’ division, Chiang Kai Shek College is already assured of gold after edging out Thailand, 71-69.
