Without a doubt, Batang Gilas continues to impress in the 2018 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship.
The Filipinos gave another eye-opening performance on Tuesday at the Stadium 29 in Bangkok, Thailand, taking down longtime tormentor China, 73-63.
After a quiet game yesterday, Dave Ildefonso made noise anew with 18 points on top of seven rebounds and two assists.
He was then flanked by twin towers AJ Edu and Kai Sotto with the former finishing with 13 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks and the latter ending with 11 markers, 10 boards, and four rejections.
The Philippines broke away from the Chinese in the third, with Ildefonso leading the charge with seven of the team’s 23 points in the quarter.
China would then close to just 59-65 inside the last two minutes, but Dalph Panopio quickly countered for Batang Gilas while Edu and Sotto closed the door shut on defense.
Not long after, they were celebrating an automatic advance into the quarterfinals by virtue of having swept the three-game group stage.
Panopio wound up with 12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists while Migs Oczon also added 11 markers of his own.
Before this win, the Philippine U18 teams of years past have lost to China by an average of 37 points.
