Batang Gilas’ strongest showing in the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship has come to a close at the hands of Australia.
For the first time in the 2018 edition of the regional meet, AJ Edu and Kai Sotto both failed to make any impact as the Filipinos fell to the Australians, 77-43, on Friday at the Stadium 29 in Thailand.
Edu only had nine points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, sup-par considering the standards he set in the previous games, while Sotto was shackled to just two markers and eight boards.
The Philippines had no player in double-digits, with Edu being the top-scorer.
After a close contest in the first quarter, Australia blasted off to a 30-point second period and never looked back.
Batang Gilas would not be able to pose any threat the rest of the way as key cogs Edu, Sotto, Dave Ildefonso, Migs Oczon, and Dalph Panopio all had a negative plus-minus rating.
Even with the semifinals exit, however, the Filipinos have already booked a ticket to the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup.
In doing so, they downed Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, China, and Bahrain along the way.
