Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas head Al Panlilio tweeted out his appreciation to the NBA, after the world's top basketball league cleared Jordan Clarkson, among a total of three players, to participate in the 2018 Asian Games.
Shortly after the NBA sent out a memo granting a one-time exception to Clarkson of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Zhou Qi of the Houston Rockets, and Ding Yanyuhang of the Dallas Mavericks to play in the regional contest, Panlilio sent out the following:
Jordan Clarkson has officially been cleared by the NBA to join the Asian Games. Thank you, NBA! Thank you Mark Tatum! Thank you POC! Laban Pilipinas! Puso!— Al Panlilio (@APan9) August 15, 2018
In the statement, the NBA reiterated that their agreement with FIBA only allowed NBA players "to participate in the Olympics, the FIBA World Cup, Continental Cup competitions, and associated qualifying tournaments." However, "due to a lack of clear communication of that agreement between the NBA and the Chinese and Philippines Basketball Federations...the NBA has agreed to provide this one-time exception."
