Ricci Rivero and Brent Paraiso, good friends and former teammates, faced off for the first time in the 2018 Milcu Sports Basketball Presented by Got Skills Elite Showcase.
In the end, it was Rivero and UP who got the better of Paraiso-powered UST, 73-69, on Saturday at the Philadelphia School Gym in Quezon City.
Rivero and Paraiso played two years together over at La Salle before transferring to Diliman and Espana, respectively, a few months ago.
Today, the two found themselves guarding one another for much of the matchup, but also found success against one another.
Rivero fired 23 points in 8-of-15 shooting to go along with nine assists, five steals, and four rebounds while Paraiso dropped 26 markers built on six triples on top of two rebounds and one steal.
The only difference between the good friends was the Fighting Maroons came through in the final frame, pouring in 18 points just as the gas ran out for the Growling Tigers.
With that, UP scored a statement win to start the tournament.
On the other hand, UST lost its second straight game, having also dropped its opener opposite FEU, 68-62.
The Tamaraws own a 1-1 record after they were also downed in their opener by Letran, 58-64.
Meanwhile, the Knights are pacing the conference with consecutive victories versus College of St. Benilde, ICC, and FEU.
