Gilas Pilipinas will fail to win a medal in the 2018 Asian Games but the Philippine national team still has a shot at a worthy consolation.

The nationals take on Syria Friday in the final classification game of the Asiad and a victory will put Gilas at 5th place, the highest finish for the Philippines in the Asian Games in 16 years.

In 2002, the Philippines placed fourth in the Busan games following back-to-back losses to South Korea and Kazakhstan. Gilas finished a sorry 7th four years ago in Incheon.

Gilas fell victim to the Koreans once again this year, losing in the quarterfinals.

Fortunately, the Philippines recovered and blasted an eight-man Japan team Tuesday to arrange the showdown against Syria.

Tip off will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, PHL time.
