Yeng 'most likely' to become permanent Gilas coach -- MVP
A 'revelation' in the Asian Games, coach Yeng Guiao is set to become the permanent coach of Gilas.

Gilas head coach Yeng Guiao will most likely retain his job for the forseeable future, according to SBP Chairman Emeritus Manny Pangilinan.

The fiery Guiao led a hastily-formed team bannered by Cleveland Cavalier Jordan Clarkson, San Miguel's Christian Standhardinger, and a Rain or Shine core to a fifth-place finish in the recently-concluded Asian Games in Jakarta, its best since 2002.

He will replace Chot Reyes, who Guiao temporarily replaced due to Reyes' one-game suspension for his role in the infamous Philippines-Australia brawl at the Philippine Arena.

"Actually, I must say that Coach Yeng was a revelation," Pangilinan said.

"It was a Jekyll and Hyde transformation eh. How we managed to bring the team together. From different personalitites, different teams and how Jordan Clarkson also blended with the team."

Pangilinan added that he had already talked to Reyes about the change in leadership of the Gilas basketball program, which is focused on the fourth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers this September.

When asked about Reyes giving way, Pangilinan says he thinks the five-time PBA Coach of the Year will, for the country.

The 72-year old Pangilinan also talked about Clarkson's recent play in the so-called 'Olympics of Asia', and noted that the 6'7" guard/forward had no trouble blending in with the team.

"I think parang mas Pilipino kaysa Amerikano eh. Kita mo yung puso nya, andon eh. Very very well rounded person."

As practice commences tomorrow evening at the Meralco Gym, Guiao said that the lineup will already be known at the conclusion of the first practice, to clear FIBA eligibility and to stress familiarity with the system.
