The Philippines will start the second round of the Asian Qualifiers on the road against Iran on September 13. Gilas will then host Qatar four days later in a game that will be played behind closed doors.
It's only a matter of time before SMC stars finally get their first crack at Gilas Pilipinas.
National team head coach Yeng Guiao says his final 12 for the fourth FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifers window is pretty much set however, he refused to disclose the list for now.
Guiao mentioned that there is still a need to sort out things regarding the national team's naturalized player against Iran and Qatar.
The players in question are Greg Slaughter, Christian Standhardinger, and Stanley Pringle though the real question lies with Slaughter as Guiao is set to pick between Standhardinger and Pringle anyway with both players considered as naturalized citizens under FIBA rules.
"Kailangan ihabol pero ang makakapag-submit noon eh siya," Guiao said of Slaughter.
"Siya magsa-submit noon, mga birth certificate niya, yung passport niya," he added.
After those three, there are 13 players in Guiao's pool although Matthew Wright and Japeth Aguilar are ineligible for the Iran game due to their one-game suspension from FIBA.
That leaves Alex Cabagnot, Asi Taulava, JP Erram, Gabe Norwood, Paul Lee, Raymond Almazan, Beau Belga, Ian Sangalang, Allein Maliksi, Marcio Lassiter, and Scottie Thompson in consideration.
"Yung naturalized na lang yung pinag-uusapan. That's going to be the 12th slot," Guiao said after practice.
"I don't want to [preempt]. Kumbaga isasabay na namin yung announcement ng lineup pag na-determne na namin kung sino yung 12th slot," he added.
