FIBA WORLD CUP: Guiao not looking past Iran and Qatar
With the hastily-formed "Gilastopainters" seeing action, Guiao guided the national team to a 5th-place finish in the recently-concluded Asian Games, a performance that drew positive response from almost everyone.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Chairman Emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan hinted the other day that the Gilas program might be handed full-time to current NLEX mentor Yeng Guiao.

With the hastily-formed "Gilastopainters" seeing action, Guiao guided the national team to a 5th-place finish in the recently-concluded Asian Games, a performance that drew positive response from almost everyone.

The news that Guiao might actually take over Gilas from current head coach Chot Reyes drew even more astounding approval.

However, nothing is set in stone yet.

The only thing sure is that coach Yeng will get to keep Gilas for two more games, this time in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers..

Guiao is not looking past Iran and Qatar, the two teams the Phililippines will face next week.

"All I can say is for sure I'll be handling this [FIBA] window,'" Guiao said Monday after practice.

"Yung mga susunod, after the Qatar game, it's SBP that will make the [decision]," he added.

With the uncertainly of the top Gilas coaching job after September 17, Guiao will let the powers that be handle the situation.

After all, the final announcement will not come from him.

"Wala namang napag-usapan regarding that [coaching change] but I think if ever there’s going to be any announcement regarding that, it cannot come from me," Guiao said.

"Hindi naman manggagaling sa akin so I cannot really answer that question categorically. If SBP wants to make that announcement, I think they will in time. If there is anything official, it will have to come from them," he added.
