Yeng says Gilas will take 16-man pool to Iran
"Wala pa rin. Let's keep it exciting. There’s no real urgency to name the 12 guys. So we’ll stick with the 16 as for now. Although it’s really just 14, kasi di naman makakalaro si Japeth at si Matthew sa Iran," Guiao said after practice Thursday.

National team head coach Yeng Guiao is in no rush to name his final 12 to start the second round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

Exactly a week before Gilas plays Iran on the road, coach Yeng is still refusing to name his final lineup, saying that they might as well name the team once they're in the Middle East.

He even declined to name any shoo-ins to his Final 12.

"We also don't want the guys who may not be chosen to feel left out this early. So malalaman din naman nila. Mas mabuti nang nandoon na kami sa Iran," he added.

With the Iran game fast approaching and short on extra bodies, Coach Yeng says the national team will take all 16 players to Iran, even Japeth Aguilar and Matthew Wright who can't play against the Iranians due to their one-game suspension from FIBA.

"We'll take all 16 players, so yung dalawang suspended di makakalaro kaya lang kailangan namin sila doon para tuluy-tuloy yung practice," Guiao said.

One problem that still persists though is the eligibility of Greg Slaughter.

Gilas is yet to hear anything if the Ginebra slotman counts as a local or not.

"We’re still in limbo with regards to the status of Greg. We’re just waiting for that. We hope it’s announced before we leave," Guiao said.

"But I think we’ll choose between Stanley and Christian on who the naturalized player will be for the Iran game. But we’re not making that decision right away. Puwede namang doon na sa Iran gawin yon eh. Kasi ang submission ng final lineup is the day before the game eh," he added.
