Manila Gilas sustains heartbreaking loss to Bosnian squad to bow out of Shanghai 3x3
Manila Gilas sustained a heartbreaking 20-21 loss to Bosnian squad Vitez EcosRomari to come back home with a 0-2 record in the Shanghai Challenger 3x3 tournament.
Down 19-20, the Filipinos went for a quick layup to even the score late.
The Ronnie Magsanoc-mentored squad however fouled in the next possession, giving the Bosnian side two free throws.
Vitez EcosRomari split the charities to secure the victory.
The Philippine squad, made up of PBA D-League stars Jeff Viernes and Gab Banal and reinforced by Filipino-American Trevis Jackson and Jamal Thomas, suffered its first loss at the hands of Serbian side Zemun, 10-22.
Both Vitez EcosRomari and Zemun are bound for Saturday's quarterfinals.
“Gilas-Manila played there best against all odds. How I wish we could made the Final 8," shared Magsanoc.
The event features 16 teams from Asia and Europe.
Despite the loss, Magsanoc was optimistic at the future.
"Praying for more support from the basketball leagues all over the country, so we can identify and get the best available players suitable for the 3X3 competition. The more time we have to prepare, and the more players we can invite to be a part of the 3x3 pool, the better chances we have of being competetive against the best teams all over the world," said Magsanoc.
He added: "This is SBP’s thrust in strengthening the 3X3 program for the country."
