MANILA, Philippines --- Team Pilipinas look to get its first win in its new era as it hosts Qatar under unusual environment.
Gilas Pilipinas will take on the visiting Qataris on Monday to continue the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
The clash at the Araneta Coliseum will be closed to the public as part of FIBA's punishment to the Philippines following the ugly brawl that also included Australia two months ago.
"You have to visualize it already this early, na tahimik, na walang magchi-cheer sayo," head coach Yeng Guiao said of the closed-door affair vs. Qatar.
"You cannot look for that hometown crowd that will energize you and encourage you. It's the first time that we are going to play in an environment such as that, but you also have to prepare yourselves mentally, kasi first time mong makikita yung ganun," he added.
More than having no crowd support, Gilas Pilipinas has more pressing issues to deal with against Qatar.
Top of the priority is to snap its losing skid of course. The Philippines has dropped back-to-back games in these Asian Qualifiers, holding on to third place in Group F with a 4-3 record.
Seeing action for Gilas Pilipinas against Qatar are Beau Belga, Alex Cabagnot, Paul Lee, JP Erram, Marcio Lassiter, Gabe Norwood, Ian Sangalang, Asi Taulava, Matthew Wright, Japeth Aguilar, Stanley Pringle, and Scottie Thompson.
Tip off for Philippines-Qatar will be at 7:30 p.m. live from the Big Dome.
