FIBA WORLD CUP: Guiao will take Gilas job if the SBP gives it to him

MANILA, Philippines --- If and when the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) decides to hand the Gilas program full time to Yeng Guiao, the fiery mentor will take it.
Coach Yeng’s initial "agreement" if you will expired Monday after the Philippine national team beat Qatar in a closed-door game at the Araneta Coliseum.
Guiao coached Gilas to a 5th-place finish in the Asian Games and with the national team dealing with numerous suspensions, the SBP decided to let Coach Yeng handle Team Pilipinas until the fourth window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
That window has come and gone and coach Yeng's Gilas went 1-1. The next window is in about two months and Gilas Pilipinas technically has no head coach for the moment with Chot Reyes stepping down and Guiao's takeover being not official yet.
It's a waiting game now.
"Siguro I'll just wait for the formal announcement of SBP, if they would want me to continue coaching," Guiao said on what's next.
All signs point to Guiao coaching Gilas through the Asian Qualifiers.
However, if Gilas ends up flaming out and fails to qualify to the 2019 World Cup, Guiao will remove himself from the national team.
I will walk away, hindi ko pala kaya," Guiao said.
This latest stint is actually Guiao's second time handling the national team. He coached Powerade-Team Pilipinas to 8th place in the 2009 FIBA-Asia Championships.
It's really milestones. It's really just delivering the objective or kung ano 'yung purpose nito. Bakit ba tayo andito? Gusto nating makarating sa World Cup eh. So pag hindi tayo nakarating sa World Cup, ikaw ang coach, mag-resign ka. So sabi ko, ganoon ang ano ko. Kung makarating tayo sa World Cup, di mag-usap ulit tayo," coach Yeng added.
Ultimately, it's up to SBP whether or not it actually wants Guiao coaching Gilas.
Coach Yeng will accept but until then, he's just waiting for another call.
