Batangas defended homecourt for a much-needed convincing victory
BATANGAS CITY – The real Batangas City is now showing up and last Thursday, the inaugural staging champion did not disappoint its hometown crowd here at the Batangas City Coliseum.
The Athletics turned on the heat in the final quarter, using a crippling 21-4 run, on their way to an 81-69 win over Caloocan in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta-Datu Cup.
It was the second straight win by Batangas, who are surprisingly not yet in the .500 win mark. The team has improved its record though to 4-5 while handing its rival its seventh loss and the tournament’s longest losing skid at six in a row.
Teytey Teodoro led the way for the Athletics with 23 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
Proof of Batangas City’s efficiency can be seen on its conscious effort of taking care of the ball as the squad only committed seven turnovers. In contrast, Caloocan turned the ball over 15 times and the Athletics were able to capitalize, scoring 17 points off their rival’s miscues.
In the other game, Rizal surprised Marikina with a relentless effort on the defensive end and pulled off a 75-69 triumph.
It was only the third win in 10 games for the Crusaders, who dealt the Shoemasters their fifth loss in in nine games.
Leading the way for Rizal was Marco Balagtas, who came away with a double-double performance of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Eric dela Cuesta chipped in 11 markers, the same output produced by Marvin Mercado.
The loss spoiled another productive night from Erwin Sta. Maria, who led the scoring chores with 24, and a double-double performance from JR Ng Sang, who had 11 points and 20 boards.
