Meralco just came out of nowhere to make the semifinals of the 2018 FIBA Asia Champions Cup.
The Bolts beat defending champion Al Riyadi,96-63, Saturday at Stadium 29, forcing a three-way tie for second place in Group B in Nonthaburi.
With Meralco, Al Riyadi, and Mono Vampire all tied with identical 1-2 records, it's the Bolts that would advance to the second round thanks to superior quotient.
Following Mono's eight-point loss to Alvark Tokyo earlier in the day, Meralco needed to beat Al Riyadi by at least 11 points. The Bolts were plus 22 in their goal.
Down after the opening period, the Bolts clamped down on defense in the second quarter, holding Al Riyadi to only seven points while scoring 26.
After maintaining a good lead through the third, Meralco landed the knockout blow with an 11-2 run to start the final quarter.
Struggling in the tournament's first two days, Meralco locals finally showed up in Thailand with Garvo Lanete leading the way with 20 points. KG Canaleta added a cool 18 points in less than 17 minutes while shooting 71.4 percent from the field.
KG (four) and Garvo (three) combined to hit seven of Meralco's 10 treys.
