Both Batangas and Makati are picking up steam just as the MPBL playoff race is heating up
The streak continues for Batangas and Makati as both teams try to bolster their respecitve playoff bids in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup.
Last Saturday, the Athletics and the Super Crunch pulled off contrasting wins over their respective rivals and both squads increased their chances of securing one of the top eight berths heading to the next round.
Batangas City showed its championship poise in beating home team Marikina, 62-52, to extend its winning run to five games.
The Athletics now move up to solo third spot of the southern division of the tournament with a 9-6 record.
Batangas City bucked the absence of Jeff Viernes as Moncrief Rogado stepped up when needed the most. The former San Miguel reserve player knocked in 19 points highlighted by his torrid 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
Big man Jhaymo Eguilos battled foul trouble, but ended up with a double-double performance of 11 points and 10 rebounds as Batagas dealt Marikina its sixth straight loss.
Marikina dropped into a tie for 11th to 12th places with the Basilan Steel as they are now both carrying 4-9 win-loss records.
Like Batangas City, Makati also sustained its winning run as the Super Crunch outlasted the Muntinlupa Cagers, 52-50.
Makati’s latest win improved its record to 10-4 in the tough northern division. It also gave Davao Occidental a free ride to the top as Muntinlupa now dropped to the second spot in the southern division with a 9-3 record.
Once the hottest team in the tournament, Muntinlupa has now lost three of its last five games under head coach Aldin Ayo, who took over the coaching chores of the Cagers from Aldrin Morante.
Morante was the head coach of Muntinlupa when the team made a sizzling 8-0 run. He was also responsible in steering the squad to a finals stint in the inaugural season.
