Yeng Guiao brings Gilas Pilipinas to his alma mater.
Former UP Fighting Maroon and current Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao enjoyed a homecoming of sorts in Gilas Pilipinas' tuneup game versus Lebanon Friday evening.
The game was held inside Guiao's alma mater University of the Philippines in the new Epsilon Chi Center. The facility is a legacy project of the College of Engineering-based fraternity Epsilon Chi where Guiao is a member.
"We just wanted to favor the UP community with a new game here. This is a new gym. It's part of our reaching out to the different sectors of the basketball fans," said Guiao, an Industrial Engineering graduate of the State U.
"Also, I played for this school and this gym is a legacy project of our fraternity so we wanted to just give some help and promote the facility. Maganda naman yung reception," added Epsilon Chi's brod from Batch 80B.
Approximately 400 basketball fans from the UP community ranging from students to alumni witnessed Gilas' gallant stand against the tall and fast Lebanon team. Gilas may have lost in a close 74-68 game but the spectators were treated to a number of highlight plays and thrilling runs from the National Team for free.
Guiao expressed his delight for having brought Gilas' quality performance to a different audience after conducting most trainings in the Meralco Gym in Pasig City.
"Actually, the reception is really good. Kung sa Meralco lang tayo ng Meralco, hindi tayo nakakabigay ng opportunity sa ibang fans eh sayang naman. So now we have a different set of people watching the games. Kapag nasa Meralco tayo, parang yung audience dun yun at yun din. Nakakabuti naman ito sa fans," he said.
Given the good reception, Guiao expressed that letting Gilas play in other venues aside from the Meralco Gym could be more of a possibility to serve the fans.
"Gilas On Tour, parang PBA On Tour din," he quipped.
