Up one with 2:20 left in the game, the reigning four-time PBA MVP missed two free throws that would have put the Philippines up, 70-67.
MANILA, Philippines --- After Jayson Castro beat the shot clock for an incredible three-pointer giving Gilas Pilipinas a 68-67 lead, the Blur found June Mar Fajardo down low for a possible score and a three-point advantage.
Fajardo tried to dunk it but he missed. He was fouled though and June Mar had the chance to score the two points from the free throw line.
Up one with 2:20 left in the game, the reigning four-time PBA MVP missed both.
While Fajardo would redeem himself a couple of plays later, giving the Philippines its last lead of the game, 70-69, in the final minute, those two missed free throws would prove to be costly for Gilas Pilipinas and Iran would eventually go on to win with a final 9-0 blast.
"Wala, nag-mintis lang talaga," Fajardo said when asked the free throws. "Nakaka-frustrate."
Gilas Pilipinas has now lost back-to-back home games and each time, the national team had the chance to win.
The Philippines just failed to execute down the stretch.
"Nakakapanghinayang," Fajardo said.
"Nandun na tayo, may chance tayo manalo. Na-shoot lang din nila yung mga crucial shots nila," he added.
Gilas Pilipinas is now in danger of missing the FIBA World Cup.
But as the national team deals with this disappointing loss, June Mar says all is not lost just yet.
"Kailangan ng time, kasi galing kami sa iba-ibang sistema. Yun lang sinasabi ni coach, kailangan talaga mag-adapt agad kasi short period lang yung preparation. Nakakalungkot pero mananalo tayo as a team, matatalo tayo as a team," he said.
"Kailangan matuto tayo sa game na ito," June Mar added.
