MANILA, Philippines --- Playing his first game back from FIBA suspension, Jayson Castro wasted little time and assumed his rightful role as the alpha for Gilas Pilipinas.

Castro scored 19 points Monday against Iran and was largely the only effective weapon for the Philippines in the second half.

Still, Castro's return was not quite enough for Gilas Pilipinas as the national team absorbed another loss, this time a 70-78 loss to the Iranians.

It's the second home loss for the Philippines since Friday and Gilas Pilipinas is now officially in danger of missing the 2019 FIBA World Cup altogether.

"Wala ganun talaga," a dejected Castro said after the loss.

"Lahat naman ginawa namin, binigay namin yung best namin. Unfortunately, natalo. Pero kung makikita niyo, yung buong game contol natin. Yun last one minute, may mga mistake kaming nagawa. At the same time, may tough shots silang pumasok. So ganun talaga," he added.

Castro was sensational in the second half, scoring 15 points to lead the Gilas offense.

All that effort despite dealing a sprained ankle he sustained in the second quarter and a bruise on his forehead after taking an unsportsmanlike foul in the fourth.

After the game, Castro needed assistance walking out of the MOA Arena.

"Syempre di naman excuse yung na-injure ka and then di ka na lalaro," Castro said.

"So talagang pinilit ko para makatulong sa team, yun lang talo pa rin," he added.

Despite clearly being Gilas' brightest spot in the loss, Castro would have preferred a pedestrian game from him but with a Gilas win.

But as he assumes his place at the top of the guard rotation for the national team, Castro looks forward to a crucial final FIBA window in February of 2019.

"Maganda kaso talo. Sana maging okay na lang and then nanalo di ba. Mas gusto ko pa yun. Hopefully next window mas maging maganda pa tsaka manalo na," Castro said on his personal performance.

"Confident naman ako na sa last window alam kong kaya natin manalo," he added.
