After a dominant showing in sports for 2018, San Miguel is looking to replicate the feat once again for 2019.
The San Miguel-backed teams have thoroughly enjoyed success in the sporting scene, taking home championships in both basketball and volleyball.
A triumvirate of the San Miguel Beermen, Ginebra Gin Kings, and the Magnolia Hotshots swept the PBA season and took home the three conference championships, a first. Alab Pilipinas, who is also sponsored by the conglomerate, waltzed its way to the ASEAN Basketball League plum earlier this year.
Volleyball also saw the coronation of the Petron Tri-Activ Spikers twice in the Philippine Superliga this year.
For San Miguel Corp. Sports Director Alfrancis Chua, the unprecedented success of the corporation’s teams were a result of a mixture of good management and relations between none other than SMC Chairman Ramon S. Ang to each of his squads.
Also a factor was having an understanding of the sports they handle, which Chua said he did in handling the affairs of the PSL squad.
“[H]ands-on talaga si Boss [Ramon S. Ang] eh. Sa lahat ng bagay. Talagang hands-on siya. Pati sa sports, alam niya ang lahat ng nangyayari. Siguro kung wala siya, iba ang mangyayari. Iba ang utak ng tao na yun. Kaya mahal na namin namin si boss RSA,” Chua said at the victory party of the Magnolia Hotshots at company headquarters in Mandaluyong.
A continuous plan that has been going on for three to four years now, the conglomerate is now reaping the benefits of success, and aims to continue dominating the Philippine sports landscape for years to come.
“We're not going to stop now. 2019, 2020, we have to find ways to make us competive,” Chua assured.
“Hindi kami puwedeng tumigil. I told the coaches, I told the managers of the teams, we need to learn more. Lalo pang palakasin and mag-improve ang bawat team. “
