League-leading Bataan barged back into the win column
Bataan brought down Rizal in a highly-physical encounter last Thursday even as Quezon City started to build a winning run in the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup at the Blue Eagle Gym in Katipunan Avenue.
After seeing its 14-game winning streak snapped, Bataan rose to the occasion and gave Rizal a sound beating, 88-74.
In getting back on the win track, the improved their win-loss record to 15-2 and firmed up their hold of the solo lead in the tournament.
It was the 13th loss in 18 games for the Crusaders who dropped to the cellar of the southern division.
While the Risers beat the Crusaders with much ease, the Capitals had to scramble for a win and needed last-minute heroics from Peejay Barua to get the job done over the Laguna Heroes, 85-80, in the second game.
Barua knocked down five crucial points in the last 56 seconds to send the Capitals to their third straight win and boosted their playoff chances.
The former La Salle standout hit a triple that shattered the game’s final deadlock. His trey in the 56-second mark of the final period put the Capitals ahead, 79-76.
He then capped his long-game brilliance by scoring the last basket of the game, sealing the win for Quezon City, which now improved its win-loss mark to 6-8 and moved up to sixth place of the standings in the northern division.
