Alab Pilipinas' rally fell short against Formosa
The new year has not been kind to Alab Pilipinas as it lost for the second time in its last three games in the 2018-2019 Asean Basketball League.
On Sunday at the Changhua Stadium in Taiwan, Filipinos rallied from eight points down in the final frame before surrendering a 72-73 decision to home team Formosa.
The defending champions went 5-0 to start the season, but once the calendar turned to 2019, only have one win to show.
A win in this one was well within their grasp as Ethan Alvano’s triple completed a 17-7 fightback that turned a 55-63 deficit into a 72-70 advantage with five ticks to go on the clock
After giving up a counter three, however, Alab failed to put up a last shot as Thomas Torres turned the ball over.
With that, they fell into a tie for the top spot with Macau which also stands at 6-2.
Of course, it didn’t help matters that Puerto Rican hulk PJ Ramos got himself ejected in the first quarter for continuous complaining.
In his stead, Renaldo Balkman tried to do it all with 27 points, 16 rebounds, and three blocks while Caelan Tiongson also turned in his best scoring output with 15 markers on top of 13 boards.
Alvano also flirted with a triple-double in tallying 11 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds.
All of that was all for naught, though, as Formosa proved steadier in the endgame.
