Gilas cadet Thirdy Ravena has been called up to Gilas Pilipinas
A Ravena is in the shortlist of players who will wear the flag for the final window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
Ateneo de Manila University forward Thirdy Ravena has been listed in the 15-man lineup for Gilas Pilipinas’ looming must-win matchups against Qatar and Kazakhstan in February.
For that, the UAAP 81 Finals MVP is nothing but honored. “It’s a great honor na ma-lineup sa national team. It’s always the best feeling to represent the country,” he said.
He then continued, “Masarap maglaro para sa bayan kasi lahat kakampi mo, lahat sumusuporta sayo.”
Not only that, Ravena also wasted no time in attending the national team practice as he went to the Meralco Gym in Ortigas right after Ateneo’s win over San Beda University in Game 2 of the 2019 Philippine Collegiate Champions League semifinals on Thursday.
“Right now, I’m gonna practice with Gilas and we’ll see. Most likely, okay na naman siya,” he told reporters. “I’m just gonna talk to (team manager) Butch Antonio and make sure everything’s approved.”
Blue Eagles’ mentor Tab Baldwin is also nothing but happy for their prized ward and nothing but hopeful that there will be no complications. As he put it, “We support that. I don’t know if the decision has been made because they will have to work on the academic (side of things), but from a basketball standpoint, we support that.”
He then continued, “I’m happy for him. At some point, that should be the goal of all players and at some point, they have to be ready to step up.”
Whatever happens, Ravena vowed to give his all for the flag. “I need to step up and gawin ang mga sinasabi ni Coach Yeng [Guiao] the best I can,” he said.
