Ateneo, with all nine players it had suited uo, took it to San Beda before taking a win that keeps it alive
With just nine players active, Ateneo de Manila University lived to fight another day in the 2019 Philippine Collegiate Champions League.
Isaac Go and Tyler Tio had to carry a heavier workload than usual, but both also still came through for the shorthanded Blue Eagles who pulled off a 74-62 shocker of a triumph over San Beda University, 74-62, on Thursday at the Ynares Center in Pasig.
Only Go, Tio, RV Berjay, Jason Credo, and Adrian Wong were good to go for the UAAP kings to begin the game. “We only had five guys and they did a heck of a job. They kept the pace where it needed to be. That set the tone for when the other guys came in,” head coach Tab Baldwin said.
BJ Andrade, SJ Belangel, Jolo Mendoza, and Thirdy Ravena joined them to start the second quarter, but they remained outnumbered by the NCAA champions’ complete lineup.
Still, the trademark discipline on both ends was there for Ateneo which got the jump on their opponents for a 6-0 start.
San Beda battled back to only four points down inside the last seven minutes, but Tio, Wong, and Go had the quick counter for the blue and white with three booming triples in a row for a 63-50 lead.
Go wouldn’t stop there just yet and with a couple more threes, increased the Blue Eagles’ edge to its biggest at 72-56 inside the last two minutes. “No heroes needed. They just needed to do what they needed to do,” coach Tab said.
He wound up with 28 points built on seven total treys while Tio chipped in 18 markers and five assists.
With the well-earned win, the kings of the UAAP forced a rubber match in the best-of-three semis series up against the NCAA champions. That Game 3 is scheduled on Saturday still at the same venue.
For the Red Lions, James Canlas showed the way with 24 points.
