Zamboanga is out for more than just basketball glory in the inaugural Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3.
The Valientes, the only team to hail from Mindanao, vow to go all-out to send a statement that the country’s southernmost area stands as one.
This, in the face of the dastardly bombing that struck Jolo last Sunday. “We're dedicating this to the victims of the Jolo bombing, we're praying nasa na magkaron na ng kapayapaan,” team owner Rolando Navarro Jr. said.
Zambo will be pitted against 11 other teams in the six-leg tournament commencing on February 16 at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong.
They will be represented by locals – all of whom believe they personify the diversity that Mindanao is proud of. “Isa yung Zamboanga Valientes na nagpapakita na Christians and Muslims can unite,” Navarro said.
He then continued, referring to his two best players, “We have Jonathan Pareno na Christian and then Das Esa na Muslim, pero we’re one. Diyan mo nakikita na talagang nagkakaisa kami as Christian and Muslims.”
