FIBA: Gilas still confident they can make World Cup
Gilas currently holds an even 5-5 card, which is good for only 4th place in Group F.

Even with their backs against the wall, Gilas Pilipinas maintains high confidence that they will qualify to the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.

Losing three of its last four, the Philippines is on the brink of elimination in the Asian Qualifiers and will face two must-win games next week against Qatar and Kazakhstan.

Gilas currently holds an even 5-5 card, which is good for only 4th place in Group F.

As it stands, the Philippines can finish from 3rd-5th in the standings. Getting to third means automatic qualification, 4th basically means a 50-50 chance, and 5th place is well... see you in 2023.

“We feel very confident that we can get in the World Cup,” Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao said.

“Yun naman ang objective natin from the beginning, try to get to the World Cup. If we win these two games, medyo palagay ko, yun na yun. But if we lose one, mahihirapan na tayo,” he added.

The Philippines would obviously like to avoid too many complications in its road to the World Cup.

And while sweeping the final two games will still be subject to multiple scenarios, it’s certainly the easiest and surest way for Gilas to advance.

Well it’s easy to say, to actually to do it is a whole other thing.

“Importante dalawa mapanalo natin,” Guiao said.

Practice has been tough for Gilas with Guiao dealing with his player’s respective PBA schedules.

Still, the national team is upbeat. They’ll try to make up time once they land in Qatar Saturday night.

“We're hoping na sapat na yung oras na ginamit namin para sa preparasyon. Ako medyo nabibitin pa pero pagdating naman namin sa Qatar, we will practice twice a day, morning and afternoon,” Guiao said.

“Also, Andray Blatche will be there so we'll try to make the most out of our time there since wala naman kaming ibang gagawin doon kung hindi mag-focus,” he added.
