FIBA WORLD CUP: Nervous Thirdy preparing for Gilas Pilipinas role

The high-flying Blue Eagle is making sure he’s on his toes, ready to take flight when he’s number is up.
Ateneo de Manila University star and UAAP Season 81 Finals MVP Thirdy Ravena is the only amateur included in the current Gilas Pilipinas pool.
As if that’s not a big enough deal, Thirdy is also in the line-up during the time that the Philippine national team is under the most pressure.
Currently sitting at fourth place in Group F, Gilas Pilipinas is faced with two must-win situations as the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers draws to a close.
Thirdy, who’s in the running to make the final 12 for the Philippines-Qatar and Philippines-Kazakhstan games, is naturally nervous.
However, if he makes the main roster, those nerves will have to go away immediately because there’s simply no room for error once Gilas takes the court next week.
“Unang-una medyo kinakabahan ako kasi first time ko sila makasama, lahat ng mga players ng Gilas,” Ravena said.
“But kapag nandoon na, wala na room para kabahan, kailangan mag-perform ako,” he added.
Thirdy’s slot in the final 12 is no sure thing. Even if he makes it, who knows how many minutes he’ll play in a national team stacked with international veterans.
Still, the high-flying Blue Eagle is making sure he’s on his toes, ready to take flight when he’s number is up.
“I need to prepare as best as a I can para if ever the time comes na kailangan ko, may role ako na kailangan gawin sa team, dapat ready ako,” he said.
“I’m preparing the best I can to give back the to the trust na binigay ni Coach Yeng sakin in getting me and bringing me to the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers,” Thirdy added.
