A lot of things can still happen but for Gilas Pilipinas to have the most clear picture heading into its final showdown against Kazakhstan, the national team will need China to beat Jordan on the road. (FIBA)
Gilas Pilipinas’ road back to the FIBA World Cup was already complicated to begin with no thanks to multiple scenarios that could play out.
Japan’s big road win over Iran Thursday, which was the former’s 7th straight win, didn’t do Gilas any favors as the national team was practically eliminated from the top-3 in Group F.
All is not lost for a top-3 finish for Gilas, however, it’s more than likely that the Philippines will hold on as the no. 4 team in Group F of the Asian Qualifiers.
It doesn’t mean that Gilas can’t have a say in it’s road to the FIBA World Cup. The Philippines will need some help though.
The most simple scenario for Gilas as of right now is to hope that host China takes care of business on the road against Jordan Friday (Saturday morning in Manila).
If China beats Jordan and drops them to a 5-6 record, then Gilas only needs to win against Kazakhstan on Sunday to make the World Cup outright as one of the seven teams to represent the region aside from the Chinese, who already have a spot as host country of the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
It’s as simple as that, well at least for now.
A lot of things can still happen but for Gilas Pilipinas to have the clearest picture heading into its final showdown against Kazakhstan, the national team will need China to beat Jordan on the road.
Tip off between China and Jordan will be at 1:30 a.m. Saturday (Manila time).
