UP rode the hot hands of Ricci Rivero to rout UST 92-66 in the 2019 Milcu Sports Basketball presented by Got Skills Hard to Guard Tournament Saturday at the Trinity Gym in Quezon City.
Rivero, a prized transferee from La Salle, waxed hot for 37 points on top of seven rebounds and six assists while versatile big man Will Gozum and sweet-shooting forward Pio Longa also added 13 markers and seven boards apiece for the Fighting Maroons who improved to 3-3.
UP found itself in a close contest for the first three and a half quarters, only up by four, 43-39, before firing away 49 points in the last 15 minutes.
The Growling Tigers’ defense just disappeared in the endgame as they suffered their second setback in five games. Long-limbed guard Vincent Marzan topped the scoring column for them with 14 points while Brent Paraiso, Rivero’s former teammate, only had four points in nine minutes.
Meanwhile, Lyceum dismantled TIP, 67-63, behind Cameroonian powerhouse Mike Nzesseu’s 17-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Jayson David and Tosi Tansingco also combined for 21 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates who sailed to 4-2.
In the day’s other game, home team Trinity blew out STI-Balagtas, 86-55, to bounce back to a 4-1 standing.
With their respective losses, TIP fell to 3-4 and STI-Balagtas fell to 2-5.
