It’s do-or-die time for Gilas Pilipinas.
The Philippines’ road to the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China remains complicated but to make things as simple as it could get, Gilas Pilipinas needs to beat Kazakhstan in Astana Sunday to have a fighting chance of advancing.
If Gilas handles its business and either Jordan or Lebanon loses in the other group, then the national team can make the World Championships for the second straight time.
For the crucial Kazakhstan game, Gilas kept its 12-man lineup against Qatar with the only exception being Scottie Thompson giving up his slot for the returning RR Pogoy.
Andray Blatche, Jayson Castro, and Marcio Lassiter among other s are expected to once again lead the Philippines in the crucial rematch against Kazakhstan.
Gilas has several ways to make the World Cup. The Philippines an advance with a win plus a loss to both Japan and Iran. A win by the Philippines and Iran coupled with a Japan loss is also good.
In that instance, Gilas makes to the World Cup as the no. 3 team in Group F. However, those scenarios are highly unlikely.
Still, the Philippines can advance with a win plus losses by both Lebanon and Jordan in the other group. Gilas can also qualify to the World Cup with a win plus a loss to either Jordan or Lebanon.
The worst-case scenario for Gilas Pilipinas now is to tie both Jordan and Lebanon at the end of it all as the Philippines will have inferior quotient and will be eliminated.
Gilas-Kazakhstan will tip off at 10:30 p.m. Sunday in Astana. Jordan and Lebanon’s games, against New Zealand and South Korea respectively, will also have the same start time.
