Gilas Pilipinas hopes to use the Jones Cup as a tuneup for the World Cup
Gilas Pilipinas, against all odds, booked a ticket to the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Taking care of business against Qatar and Kazakhstan and then getting help from rival Korea, the Filipinos hurdled huge obstacles to get the right to play in China.
While that is already something to celebrate, that is far from the end for the Philippines as it now turns its attention to the world meet in September.
With seven months to prepare, national team head coach Yeng Guiao already has his sights set on what’s next. “We would like to be able to participate in the Jones Cup. It’s a logical thing for us now,” he said in their homecoming press conference on Wednesday inside the Meralco Compound in Pasig.
The Jones Cup is an annual invitational in Taiwan. A year ago, Ateneo de Manila University represented the country and registered a fourth-place finish.
Of course, Coach Yeng is well aware that a more than a few kinks would have to be worked out for that to be possible. As he put it, “I don’t know if (we would be) able to fit that into the PBA schedule, but that’s just top of mind right now.”
The 2019 PBA Philippine Cup has just resumed and will run until May while the Commissioner’s Cup will begin soon thereafter. The 2019 Jones Cup, on the other hand, is expected to commence on July.
