“On your first game you have to bring everything you have. By the time we play our first game, by the time we get there, we should be ready to play 100 percent. There’s no such thing as getting warmed up first.” — Gilas head coach Yeng Guiao. (FIBA)
Gilas Pilipinas will be rocking as soon as the 2019 FIBA World Cup tips off in China later this year.
After the draw Saturday, FIBA has revealed the first round schedule for all 32 teams in the World Cup that will run from August 31 to September 15 across eight Chinese cities.
Group D play will open right on the first day, with Gilas Pilipinas taking on world no. 13 Italy in Foshan.
After facing off against the Italians, Gilas will have no. 4 Serbia on September 2 and Angola on September 4.
“I think that’s also good for us,” national team head coach Yeng Guiao said on Gilas’ tough opening assignment against Italy followed by the clash against Serbia, the country second to Team USA in the last two major World-level tournaments.
“It just means to say na pag-nakalaban mo yung Italy, on your first game you have to bring everything you have. By the time we play our first game, by the time we get there, we should be ready to play 100 percent. There’s no such thing as getting warmed up first. It’s a one-time deal and we better be ready for that,” he added.
Round 2 games as well as the first round of the classification round will take place on September 6 until September 9.
The knockout phase will start with the quarterfinals on September 10.
The final classification games are set for September 12 and 14 while the semifinals will tip off on September 13. The World Cup ends with the Finals on September 15 in Beijing.
