Entering the Fantastic 8 of the 2019 Chooks-to-Go NBTC League National Finals presented by SM, Jalen Green was on a high.
Green had just led FilAm Sports in toppling Kai Sotto and Ateneo de Manila High School and they were heavily favored to go through San Beda High School and go all the way to a rematch with defending champion Nazareth School of National University.
Only, the Red Cubs had other plans - chief among them unleashing unheralded Tony Ynot to make life difficult for Green.
"Sabi namin sa mga bata, pag naka-dunk yan, mabubuhay lahat ang crowd so pilitin niyong hindi maka-dunk," said head coach Manu Inigo post-game. "Stay in front of him, talagang hindi dapat siya makabwelo ng talon."
Ynot did just that and in the process, gave USA's no.1-ranked high school player his toughest test yet.
Yes, Green still had 39 points on top of 13 rebounds, three steals, and two assists, but also turned the ball over six times.
More importantly for the MMBL champions, he only had one dunk. "Sabi nila coach sa akin, defense lang. Ibigay mo ang best mo," Ynot told reporters post-game.
He then continued, "Ginawa ko nga lang yung best ko para sa team kasi first time ko rin sa NBTC."
The first-year swingman even came through when it mattered most for San Beda which was trying to hold off FilAm Sports in the dying moments.
Of course, USA put the ball in the hands of their 6-foot-6 swingman who wasted no time in willing his way inside.
Only, once he was there, Green was blocked from behind by Ynot.
Yes, Tony Ynot, standing at 5-foot-11, closed the door on the Fil-Am phenom.
Without a doubt, that was just the statement he needed to make now that the Red Cubs are into the Fearless 4.
More importantly, that was just the introduction to the world he was looking for now that he is an All-Star. "'Di po ako makapaniwalang [All-Star ako nung una], pero ngayon, opo na po," he beamed.
