Dolores National High School had to travel by sea and land for 24 hours just to get to play in its first-ever NBTC League National Finals.
The boys from Eastern Samar packed inside one van, rode from Dolores to Allen Port in Northern Samar, boarded the RORO, set sail for Matnog Port in Sorsogon, got off there and then rode upward to Manila.
Once in Manila, the boys were left in awe at what they saw - from the SM MOA Arena to their hotel in Harrison St.
What Dolores NHS didn't know then was that it was their story that actually left just about everybody in awe.
That includes basketball superstars Kiefer Ravena and Baser Amer and volleyball icon Alyssa Valdez.
"I think everybody saw their story and read their story on how they made their trip over here. They were such an inspiration not only for basketball players, but for everybody else like me, Baser, and Alyssa," Ravena said as the three of them treated the kids from Eastern Samar to dinner last Friday.
Valdez can only agree. "I think this serves as an inspiration and a great reminder for all athletes that if you really want it, a lot of sacrifices have to be made and there are a lot of people who will help you get to your dream," she said after they conversed with the boys for a couple of hours in a fastfood restaurant in SM MOA.
She then continued, "Sobrang happy lang kami na we get to inspire these kids and vice versa. They inspired us to be kids again, to look back and be humbled and be grateful for all the things we have right now."
The national team open hitter then reiterated that all of us should be inspired with Dolores NHS' dedication to get to the national championship for high school against all odds. As she put it, "They travelled 24 hours to play the sport that they love and to represent their region. Na-inspire kami sa passion, sa commitment, sa sacrifice they made just to play."
She then continued, "They could have said, 'No, it's too hard to get here, we don't have any means.' But they made it possible and now, this is an unforgettable moment for them."
Indeed, along with getting to play in SM MOA Arena and getting to sleep in a hotel for the first time, the kids from Eastern Samar also got to spend time with superstars of two sports.
Even more, Ravena and Amer gifted them game shoes they can wear as they try to get even better. "Nagdala kami ng shoes para sa kanila tapos konting kwentuhan at tawanan. Pagdating namin, na-feel naming excited sila kasi ganun din ako dati pag may nakita akong PBA player," the latter said.
In the end, the three were nothing but glad to have inspired the NBTC's "RORO team" in the way they have inspired the Philippines. "Every now and then, we encounter stories na talagang nakaka-inspire and I think it was just our duty to give back. Gusto lang naming makatulong sa players nila," Ravena said.
He then continued, "We want to remind them to appreciate the people who made all this possible. Langit at lupa ang ginawa nila para makarating dito and it just gets to show na talagang there are people who will rally behind them as long as they continue to do the thing they love."
