Four months from their face-off in the UAAP 81 Finals, Thirdy Ravena and Juan Gomez de Liano will yet again be on opposing sides in the upcoming 2019 SLAM Rising Stars Classic, Sunday at Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong.
Ateneo de Manila University's do-it-all wing and the University of the Philippines' all-around playmaker won't be going at it on the court, however.
Instead, Ravena and GDL will be facing off on the sidelines as assistant coaches for Team Punks and Team Hype, respectively, in the annual showdown of the best young talent based in Manila.
Ravena will be helping out De La Salle University assistant coach Gian Nazario as they handle a side built upon the core of UAAP 81 champion Nazareth School of National University in Gerry Abadiano, Terrence Fortea, and Carl Tamayo.
They will be flanked by Arellano High School's Aaron Fermin; Hope Christian High School's Harvey Pagsanjan; Lyceum of the Philippines University's Mac Guadana; La Salle Green Hills' Joel Cagulangan, Joshua David and Inand Fornilos; University of Sto. Tomas' Bismarck Lina and Mark Nonoy; and FEU's RJ Abarrientos and Xyrus Torres.
On the other hand, GDL will be lending a hand to Ateneo assistant coach Yuri Escueta as they guide a squad fronted by towering teen Kai Sotto and Ateneo teammates Geo Chiu and Forthsky Padrigao.
They will be joined as well as Adamson High School's and Adam Doria and Joem Sabandal; De La Salle Zobel's Raven Cortez; Mapua High School's Dan Arches, Clint Escamis, Paolo Hernandez, and Jonnel Policarpio; Far Eastern University-Diliman's Royce Alforque, Jose Rizal University High School's John Amores; and Xavier School's Miguel Tan.
Last November, Ravena and the Blue Eaglets swept GDL and the Fighting Maroons to claim back-to-back championships.
