For dad Ervin, Kai Sotto has all it takes to play the European style of basketball
Kai Sotto will spend the next two months strengthening his body in Atlanta in the US.
Where he goes after that is yet to be determined.
For dad Ervin, though, Kai's talents would be perfect for a particular brand of basketball. "Yung skill set ni Kai is pang-European style of play," he said proudly a send-off program for his son hosted by Ayala Foundation together with Chooks-to-Go, Thursday at Ayala Museum in Makati.
The elder Sotto then went on to mention that his pride and joy is a skilled big man who can do damage from all over the court - very much like skilled big men Kristaps Porzingis and Gasol brothers Pau and Marc that Europe has produced.
This, as compared to American style of play that, for Ervin, is founded upon athleticism. "Ang US, para sa akin, is more on athleticism habang ang European, more on team concept, dadaanin ka sa utak at ball movement," he said.
He then continued, "Alam naman natin tayong mga Pilipino, 'di tayo tulad ng ibang American player kaya kelangan nating makahanap ng paraang makasabay."
Almost a month ago, it had been reported that Kai has received offers from Spanish and German teams.
His father, however, made it a point to reiterate that they have not yet decided where they will be headed to after their two-month stint in Atlanta. "Kami, one step at a time lang talaga muna. Ngayon, palakasin lang muna talaga katawan niya," he said.
According to the Sotto family patriarch, they will be making that next decision after 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup in June.
