Alab Pilipinasí title reign has come to a close earlier than expected
Alab Pilipinas is unsuccessful in its title defense in the 2018-2019 Asean Basketball League.
The Filipinos have been dethroned after suffering a second straight setback to home team Hong Kong, 102-84, on Wednesday at Southorn Stadium.
Back-to-back Local MVP Ray Parks Jr. and the Puerto Rican pair of PJ Ramos and Renaldo Balkman still gave it their all, but they just didn’t have any answer for O’Darien Bassett and Marcus Elliott.
With that, second-seed Philippines bowed out of contention after getting swept by seventh-seed Eastern.
Early on, Alab had an 18-6 lead only to see Bassett and Elliot get together for a 16-1 run to steal away a 22-18 advantage in favor of the home team.
The Filipinos wouldn’t be able to recover from there even as Ramos and Parks Jr. totaled 21 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists and 19 markers, five boards, and two dimes, respectively.
Balkman, meanwhile, was only limited to, for his standards, 16 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.
The Philippines was on a quest for history, gunning for the league’s first-ever back-to-back championships, but will now see four other teams advance to the semifinals where they will fight over the title it had just lost.
