James Canlas teamed up with Donald Tankoua and Evan Nelle to tow San Beda past UP
Perennial champion San Beda University stamped its class on upstart University of the Philippines for a 75-66 decision in the two teams' opener in the 2019 Filoil Flying V Centre, Sunday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Donald Tankoua was, as always, the steadying force as his 24 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists powered the Red Lions to a convincing victory to commence the preseason.
Young guns James Canlas and Evan Nelle also impressed with the former finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds and the latter ending with seven markers and five assists.
It was also Nelle who had the basket and bonus that quelled the Fighting Maroons' late rally.
With their lead down to six, 61-67, inside the last four minutes, the second-year point guard blew by Noah Webb and then willed in a layup. He also got fouled by James Spencer and converted the charity to re-increase his side's lead to 72-61.
The three-time NCAA champions would not be threatened until the final buzzer.
Ricci Rivero paced State U with 18 points and five rebounds while fellow transferee Kobe Paras also added 18 markers and four boards.
The two players are the biggest gets in what has been a big offseason for them.
They were without the services of Gomez de Liano brothers Javi and Juan as well as court general Jun Manzo and big man Will Gozum in this one, however.
