Ricci Rivero will lead the way for the Philippines in the 2019 FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup.
The University of the Philippines swingman will carry much of the load as he wages war alongside high school standouts RJ Abarrientos and Rhayyan Amsali as well as Far Eastern University big man Barkley Ebona in the regional meet commencing on Wednesday in China.
While FEU-Diliman's Abarrientos and San Beda High School's Amsali are tantalizing talents, they are youngsters who will be competing against players with ages ranging from 25 to 35. Meanwhile, this will be Ebona's first time on the international stage.
That means that Rivero, the 178th-ranked player in the country at just 20-years-old himself, is the undisputed leader for the Filipinos. They will be coached by Ronnie Magsanoc.
The Philippines, seeded 15th, has been grouped with fourth-seeded Qatar, 16th-seeded Iran, 21st-seeded Samoa, and 22nd-seeded Thailand.
On the other hand, the Filipino women have been seeded at 10th and have been grouped with 14th-seeded Chinese Taipei, 15th-seeded Vanuatu, and 18th-seeded Samoa.
Five-on-five national team players Jack Danielle Animam, Afril Bernardino, Clare Castro, and Janine Pontejos will wear the flag as national team coach Pat Aquino will call the shots.
