The UAAP scored a thrilling triumph over the NCAA in the Filoil Preseason All-Star Game
Shorthanded and all, the UAAP All-Stars still had more than enough to get the better of the NCAA All-Stars for an 86-83 decision, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Despite having supposed starters Kobe Paras and Ricci Rivero out due to injury, the UAAP All-Stars got much-needed contributions from the De La Salle University backcourt of Andrei Caracut and Aljun Melecio to come away with the well-earned win in the 2019 Filoil Flying V Preseason All-Star Game.
Caracut top-scored for his team with 12 points on top of two assists and two rebounds while Melecio made his presence felt all over with seven markers, seven dimes, and four boards.
The UAAP All-Stars also welcomed with open arms Mark Nonoy who only arrived early in the final frame after attending his high school graduation. "You can just pick anyone (from the bench) and you're sure they're going to deliver," head coach Franz Pumaren said post-game.
The University of Sto. Tomas prized prospect scored all of his eight points on top of three assists and three rebounds as he played all of the fourth quarter.
It was also Nonoy who finished back-to-back fastbreak setups from Melecio to punctuate a 6-0 run that increased a one-point edge to an 81-74 lead with 3:10 remaining.
Still, the NCAA All-Stars kept coming and James Canlas' basket and bonus pulled them within 83-84 with 29 ticks to go.
Following a defensive stop and then a timeout, however, Jaycee Marcelino's muffed on his would-be game-winner from the midrange.
A breakaway layup from Simon Camacho moments later and the UAAP All-Stars were celebrating the well-earned win.
Camacho, representing Adamson University, wound up with 11 points while John Lloyd Clemente from National University also added 10 markers of his own.
For the NCAA, Lyceum of the Philippines University top gun Jaycee Marcelino showed the way with 19 points and three rebounds while twin brother Jayvee chimed in 10 markers, five assists, and two boards.
