Evan Nelle and James Canlas ran circles around their more experienced counterparts in San Beda University’s 74-57 schooling of De La Salle University, Sunday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

Nelle did it all with four points, 10 assists, three rebounds, and two steals while Canlas was right there with him with 15 markers, seven boards, and two blocks as the Red Lions roared all the way to the mountaintop of the 2019 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament.

As the young backcourt more than held their own opposite the Green Archers' veteran guards Jordan Bartlett, Andrei Caracut, and Aljun Melecio as well as prized prospect Joel Cagulangan, they completed a clean sweep of the preseason tournament for the second time in the last three years.

All of it wouldn't have been possible if not for the brilliance of their second-year backcourt which sent a statement that the future is now for the three-time kings of the NCAA.

Behind Nelle's playmaking and Canlas's scoring, San Beda went on a 24-5 run to start the third that erased a one-point halftime deficit and erected a 57-39 advantage late in the quarter. "At halftime, we talked about our heart. I just told them to contain their emotions because we still had 20 minutes to play," head coach Boyet Fernandez said post-game.

The Green Archers tried to mount a comeback to begin the final frame and pulled within, 47-59, only to see Clint Doliguez and Donald Tankoua quell their uprising with a triple and a basket and bonus for a 67-48 edge. "I just have to credit the boys because they just wanted to win," coach Boyet said.

In the end, Tankoua was solid as always with 17 points and six rebounds while Doliguez wound up with 13 markers and six boards.

Tankoua was also adjudged the Tournament MVP and stands alongside teammates Canlas and Nelle as well as La Salle's Justine Baltazar and Adamson University's Simon Camacho in the Mythical Team.

The 9-0 run in the preseason tournament is nothing but a big boost as the Red Lions prepare for their title defense in NCAA 95.

On the other hand, the Green Archers settled for a runner-up finish as Encho Serrano was their lone player in double-digits with 12 points to go along with six rebounds.

Their high-octane backcourt of Bartlett, Caracut, Melecio, and Cagulangan only merged for 19 points in 6-of-24 shooting, seven assists, five rebounds.
