Gilas Pilipinas gets a passing grade after its first real tuneup ahead of the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Gilas played Mighty Sports Monday at the Meralco Gym and despite being down for most of the outing, the national team salvaged an 85-all draw after Marcio Lassiter and CJ Perez each hit clutch triples in the final minute to force the tie.
Guiao was happy with his team’s defense in particular. Gilas had to deal with Mighty featuring five imports led by Renaldo Balkman and Eugene Phelps.
“We just lived off our natural chemistry an it’s really nice to look at. Nobody really was trying to dominate the game, the ball was moving around,” Guiao said.
“They showed good effort on defense. We haven’t really practiced defense in the past few days, encouraging naman yung resulta. I think we can still improve on a lot of departments,” he added.
Gilas was missing a few players from its main pool and the national team’s offense felt it for sure.
The Philippines struggled to start against Mighty and only had four points halfway through the opening period. Gilas was down 10 after one.
Still, Guiao is confident that the Gilas offense will get it going soon enough.
“Nakakalimutan nila yung mga plays namin. As confused as they get sometimes, we’re still able to manufacture a good game,” Guiao said.
“Our execution is going to get better in a few weeks, hopefully before we leave for Spain and when Andray comes in,” he added.
